MINI-PROJECT WITH GENIALLY
GENIALLY: “PLANNING A TRIP”
I do this activity every year to practice “going to”
and vocabulary related to travelling. They plan a trip to any destination in the world. They present their trips to the rest of the class by using a Genially or Canva presentation. Their digital creations are the support for their oral presentations. I am attaching “old” Genially
presentations because I usually do the activity at the end of the year and this
course will be finishing before that time. The timing is just not right but this is
the process that we will follow and the result will be similar to the presentations
below.
- Present
a plan which shows clearly the staging of the activities that the students
used to prepare the project (e.g. Stage 1. Choose topic and establish
groups; 2) choose modality of Genially…)
1. Students choose a destination
where they would like to go.
2. I give them a handout with all
the information they need to include.
3. I let them get in pairs of their
choice. That way they will feel more comfortable and they can get together
after school more easily if needed.
4. They usually choose the
presentation modality. All of them are familiar with Genially, so no
explanation on how it works is generally needed.
5. I show them the rubric I use
to grade their presentations.
- Comment
on how decisions were taken as to the grouping of students and timings of
the project.
Grouping: as I said before, I let them get into groups of their choice. That way
they will feel more comfortable and they can get together after school more
easily if needed. I let them choose the role each one has in the project.
Timing:
Half a session: explanation of
the project.
One session: I take my students to the computer room to
start working on their projects for the entire hour with my guidance.
Half a session: for final
“touches” and questions.
Presentations: each day 2
groups present their work and the rest has to say 1 reason why they would go to
that destination and one reason why they wouldn’t.
- A sample of any additional materials you used (handouts, project planners etc.)
- Links to the projects made by your students
- Lastly,
do not forget to reflect on how the use of the tool has optimized your
students’ learning experience and has helped you achieve the objectives.
Would you change anything?
Using Genially has made
students presentations on planning a trip very appealing and fun by infusing
them with dynamic visuals, interactive elements, and storytelling. With its
user-friendly interface and diverse templates, Genially facilitates the
creation process, enabling students to craft presentations that engage
audiences effectively. This optimization enhances comprehension, retention, and
overall presentation impact, elevating the learning experience for both
presenters and viewers. When giving their oral presentations, students feel
more confident when they are supported by a Genially presentation.
I wouldn’t change much. Some
years some presentations have too much text and students tend to read instead
of speaking. That’s why I will tell them this time that they can’t use long
texts in their presentations, just prompts to help them with their oral
presentations.

Absolutely! "PLANNING A TRIP" sounds like a fantastic classroom activity, especially as vacations approach. To enhance it further, allocating more time for students to work on budgeting and pricing could be beneficial. This not only reinforces language skills but also integrates math, providing a comprehensive learning experience.
ReplyDeleteHi, Silvia! I think your idea is great! No doubt that it is a recurring activity for you. It offers a motivating and related to real life situation. You did a great job with the handout, as it gives freedom of choice while it sets the parts of the project in a very visual way. It has inspired me to do something similar for my students.
ReplyDeleteTo add some feedback, I agree with the previous comment about the idea of giving more time to work on budgeting and currency exchange. I would also add a section in the presentation to show some typical souvenirs.
I have browsed your blog and it's filled with great ideas. Thank you for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI’ve liked this blog and specially this entry about World Travel. It is very similar to the project I’m working on with my students of Administrative Vocational Training. I’ve liked many details and the Genially is quite interesting. I’ll take some notes, for sure! In fact, one of the things I’m taking from this course is the variety of resources and ideas from other teachers that I’m receiving.
ReplyDeleteIt’s been great.
