STORYJUMPER
STORY
JUMPER
To start with, I have to say that I didn’t
actually do the activity with any of my groups. Instead, I did a sample myself
to show the students what they will be asked to do and then I will ask them to
do something similar in the next coming months. Therefore, I will answer the
questions in the future form.
My sample book was based on an hypothetical
situation: “If I could change my school,…” My students will have to do the same
with other hypothetical situations.
●
How did you organise the groups?
I will divide the class in groups of 4. I
will try to have a combination of “strong” and “weak” students.
● What was the sequence of tasks that you followed
to get to the final product?
1. I will assign
5 different topics: a) what would you do I you were the mayor of your town, b)
what would you do if you were rich, c) what would you do if you were invisible,
d) what would you do if you could fly and what would you do if you knew you
were going to die in 2 weeks. Students will be able to choose their own
situation too if suitable.
2. We will go
over the second conditional structure to ensure they will use correct grammar.
3. I will show
them my sample book and explain how Story Jumper works.
4. I will give
them some guidelines regarding the length, content and format of their books.
5. They will
have some brainstorming and will start on their books. It will be done in class
with my help.
6. They will
share their product as a group (they will use the “collaborate” option among
them but they will submit only one book) with me first and then they will
present it to the rest of the class on the smart board.
● What were the specific learning objectives for
this activity? How did the use of the tool help the learners achieve these
objectives? Please be specific and give concrete examples.
1. Understanding Conditional Grammar: Students will demonstrate proficiency in understanding and using the second conditional structure to discuss hypothetical situations and their possible outcomes. “If I were rich, I would…”
2. Creative
Thinking and Writing Skills: Students will engage in creative thinking and
writing exercises to generate hypothetical scenarios using the second
conditional. They will also develop
problem-solving skills as they brainstorm creative solutions to hypothetical
problems presented in their books. Since I gave them hypothetical situations,
they will have to imagine them and write them on their books. They are not
everyday situations (e.g. being invisible), so they will have to discuss them
with their classmates.
3. Language
Proficiency: By constructing stories using the second conditional, students
will enhance their language proficiency, including vocabulary expansion,
grammatical accuracy, and fluency in expressing hypothetical situations and
their potential outcomes. For example, they will have to extend their
vocabulary to express certain situations: “go through a wall”, “take advantage
of the days I have left”, etc.
4. Collaboration
and Communication: Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with
peers, share ideas, and provide feedback on each other's stories. Since they
are working in groups, they will have to do this.
5. Digital
Literacy: By using Story Jumper, students will develop digital literacy skills
as they navigate the platform to create, edit, and publish their stories
online. They will also learn how to incorporate multimedia elements such as
images and audio to enhance their storytelling experience.
● In what ways (be specific) was creativity and the
use of imagination encouraged in your students?
I will give them
hypothetical situations that will make them think about unusual scenarios.
Besides, they will have to be creative for the layout of their book.
● What did your students enjoy most / least
about this activity?
I imagine they
will like the fact that at the end they are going to end up with an actual
book. They may not like the fact that Story Jumper provides templates and illustrations for creating stories,
but the customization options are limited compared to other platforms.
● What would you change next time?
Since I haven’t
tried it out yet, I can’t really answer.
● How were the finished projects shared with
the rest of the class?
As I said before, they will share their product as a
group (they will use the “collaborate” option among them but they will submit
only one book) with me first and then they will present it to the rest of the
class on the smart board. Students will be given the opportunity of adding
ideas to the book of the other groups.
● What opportunities were there for students to
co-evaluate and discuss the learning experience with each other?
I will
create a Google form to evaluate the activity as a whole and the book that each
group will create.
